Black Belt Certification
HIGHER BLACK BELT
RANKING THROUGH
THE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF JUJITSU
Styles such as Danzan Ryu or
Yoshin
Ryu etc. use a
common curriculum from school to school. Many individual
schools use their own curriculum designed by their head
Instructor. Because of different styles of Martial Arts, I am
sure in your Dojo, your list of belt requirements would be
different then what I use in my school. However, no matter
where you travel in the World, you would recognize a Jujitsu
School. They all demonstrate the following techniques:
Stances and Movements
Evasive Maneuvers
Falling Techniques
Blocking Techniques
Striking Techniques
Kicking Techniques
Locking Techniques
Throwing Techniques
Grappling Techniques
Strangling Techniques
Weapon Disarming Techniques
Instructors that use
modern systems or that do not work under a higher level
Instructor are advanced to higher black belt ranking under the
Federation by their time in rank and for their dedication to
the Martial Arts community and for their promotion of the AFJ.
If you are an AFJ Instructor you can advance to a higher
level by teaching for the required time between ranks and then
request rank advancement by filling out an AFJ application. To
maintain high Federation standards, and to discourage
Instructors from collecting "inaccurate wall certificates",
all AFJ Instructors ranked above 1st Degree Black Belt are
required to actively promote the style of Martial Art or Arts,
in which they are registered. Failure to comply with this
policy may result in your upper Black Belt rank reverting
back to 1st Degree Black Belt. If you are promoting your
listed style of Martial Art again, please send a letter to the
Federation stating your intentions and your original rank will
be reinstated at no cost. Time equivalent to 1st Degree Black
Belt is 3 years of training. A basic time guide for further
advancement is as follows:
2nd Degree after 2 years as a 1st Degree Black Belt
3rd Degree after 3 years as a 2nd Degree Black Belt
4th Degree after 4 years as a 3rd Degree Black Belt
5th Degree after 5 years as a 4th Degree Black Belt
6th Degree after 6 years as a 5th Degree Black Belt
7th Degree after 7 years as a 6th Degree Black Belt
8th Degree after 8 years as a 7th Degree Black Belt
9th Degree after 9 years as a 8th Degree Black Belt
10th Degree after 10 years as a 9th Degree Black Belt
Founders of new
Martial Arts Systems time in rank may differ from the above
time schedule.
